In Conversation with Jane Bull

Our Director of Accounting, Jane Bull has been with us for over 13 years and continues to bring exciting and innovative ideas to her flourishing department. A wide range of skills under her belt Jane worked tirelessly as an audit manager before moving over to lead the accounts team, which includes a number of seniors and trainees, of which she leads the training programme. To find out more about Jane we asked her a few questions about how she got to this point in her career and what motivates her in her role within the firm:

  1. What do you enjoy most about your job?
One of the best things about working in practice is the variety of clients I am able to assist. From setting up accounts procedures for small start-ups, assisting charities with developing good financial controls, to designing systems improvements for large corporates. The variety is fascinating and means every day is different. This and working with a great team of staff at Wenn Townsend are two of the things I enjoy most about my job.
  2. What has been the defining moment in your career to date?
Having been at Wenn Townsend for 13 years, there are many key moments in my career to date. In the first 10 years or so I predominantly worked in the audit department and thoroughly enjoyed leading the larger audits. A defining moment would be my move to the accounts department a couple of years ago, and using my systems development experience to bring new ideas to the team. I love working with the strong group of staff we have built and assisting a wide range of clients with our expertise.
  3. Who would be the dream client?
Every client has its own unique positives, the variety is what make the job enjoyable. I particularly enjoy developing financial systems though, so I think a dream client would be a relatively new start up requiring financial procedures to be put in place. Assisting them with this, completing regular work and keeping them up to date and informed of their finances. Often the aim with new start-ups is growth and with good financial procedures in place, it is great to watch the companies develop without the directors having to worry about their finances.
  4. How would you want your colleagues or clients to describe you?
Hopefully favourably! I’d like to think my colleagues would describe me as a team player and someone always willing to assist when they need help. At Wenn Townsend we have a great ICAEW training programme which I lead, and as a result I think my colleagues find me a useful go to for assistance and training queries. I’d like to think my team and clients would describe me as thorough in my approach to their finances, and approachable if any additional queries or assistance is required.
  5. What do you most want to achieve in your career?
Over the years I have built great relationships with my clients, and I would like nothing more than to continue supporting them in their future success. I aim to continue to develop the accounts team and ultimately join the partners at Wenn Townsend to continue assisting my clients well into the future.
